Kris Crookes from ESH CONSTRUCTION …

has been nominated by colleague Simon Park for his work on THE  Enterprise Zone Infrastructure Phase 2.

Kris’s nominator tells us why he was nominated:

Kris has played a key role in delivering toolbox talks, which ensure all the construction staff are briefed on the

ecological requirements of the scheme. Kris also engaged with external auditors for the Considerate

Constructors Scheme, and the ISO 14001 environmental management certification.

As part of the Esh Construction ‘Added Value’ offering, site visits were arranged for 40 Sunderland College students

and Kris delivered a talk covering the environmental constraints on the project. The talk included details of Great Crested Newt control measures, which involved newt fencing and trapping prior to work starting.

Outside of work Kris is a keen wildlife photographer, and he used his skills to create an onside ‘Wildlife Report’, which was displayed in the welfare unit. The report contained pictures of the species seen, and their location on site – this included Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail and Ringed Plover, amongst others.

While joiners were on site, Kris encouraged them to erect a ‘kestrel box’, as the birds had been sighted in the area. Kris also engaged with suppliers to donate surplus materials and plants, which were re-used to create planters, which help improve the appearance of the site.

Alongside speaking with the Sunderland College students, Kris prepared a ‘Site Information Pack’ for the learners, which included a summary of the environmental conditions on site. Kris also played a key role in the external audits for Esh Construction’s renewal of the ISO 14001 environmental management system.

How Kris has gone the extra mile to enrich and enhance biodiversity on this project…
Kris has used his expertise, and passion for wildlife to communicate the importance of protecting wildlife on site, both to the site operatives, and to local students.

Through his skills as a wildlife photographer, Kris has communicated the abundance of species on the site, with the ‘Wildlife Report’, his engagement with the supply chain and trades, also led to the ‘Kestrel Box’ and ‘Planters’ being implemented; this was not a requirement of his job, and required no prompting from Esh Construction management.

It is no understatement to say that Kris is an expert in all things nature, and often the on-site Ecologist would refer to him for advice!
