Tree planting has become one of the most visible symbols of environmental action across the UK. But planting more trees is not enough.
If we are serious about delivering long-term biodiversity gains and climate resilience, we must focus on planting the right species, in the right location, at the right time, and with a clear understanding of how our climate is changing.

Moving Beyond Numbers
Too often, tree planting success is measured by the number of trees planted rather than the quality and longevity of the outcomes achieved. Yet poorly planned planting schemes can create significant ecological and operational challenges.
Species that are unsuitable for local soil conditions, hydrology, or future climate scenarios may struggle to survive. Trees planted without consideration for surrounding habitats can reduce biodiversity value rather than enhance it. In urban environments, inappropriate species selection can create long-term maintenance issues, conflict with infrastructure, or fail to provide meaningful ecological connectivity.
The most successful biodiversity projects are those that move beyond compliance and targets to deliver genuine, lasting environmental value.

In reality, establishment and long-term stewardship determine whether biodiversity benefits are realised.
